What's the difference between an MIT ID, Kerberos, and MUMMS account?

MIT ID and Kerberos accounts

An MIT ID is needed for card/badge access to MIT.nano facilities. Non-MIT users and vendors may be sponsored by MIT.nano to obtain a badge. The badge process involves receiving, in the following order:

  • MIT ID number: A 9-digit identification number, automatically assigned by MIT
  • MIT Kerberos account: An online identity in MIT's Kerberos security system, not automatically assigned
  • MIT ID card/badge: A physical card that is read by access-door card readers to let you into rooms and buildings. You must already have both an MIT ID number and activated Kerberos identity to obtain this card.

MIT.nano/MTL MUMMS accounts

An MIT.nano/MTL MUMMS account is required to become a user in MIT.nano. The MUMMS system tracks your completion of safety requirements and your billing information. MUMMS is separate from your MIT Kerberos account but does interface with the main MIT systems.

Because certain safety training courses can only be accessed and completed with a Kerberos account, be sure to enter your MIT Kerberos username (also called your campus username) when you set up your MUMMS account.

CORAL accounts

After you create a MUMMS account, you will need to complete all required training and billing prerequisites. Doing so will activate your linked CORAL account and enable you to reserve a tool or instrument in CORAL. Log in to CORAL with your MUMMS username and password.
